Green Bay to Interview Mike Pettine for Defensive Coordinator Position
7 years agoAccording to Adam Schefter, the Green Bay Packers are scheduled to interview Mike Pettine for their defensive coordinator job. Pettine had most recently served as head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2015, going 10-22 during his tenure there. He lost his job during a particularly crazy -- even by Cleveland standards -- time at the organization. The general manager Ray Farmer and fellow front office guru Mike Lombardi fired Pettine not due to disappointment with his performance, but rather because they thought they had a chance to hire assistant coach Josh McDaniels from the Patriots. This led to criticism of their regime as well as speculation that they had been guilty of tampering. Eventually, this resulted in Farmer being fired as well. Pettine would seem to be a strong choice for defensive coordinator, although current Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio still seems to be Green Bay’s top choice. Fangio’s status in Chicago is still in limbo, so it is unclear whether Green Bay has a chance at getting him. Regardless, expect improvement from Green Bay’s defense in the 2018 season.
