Mike McCarthy Gets Extension From Packers
7 years agoESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Green Bay’s head coach, Mike McCarthy, received a one-year contract extension earlier this year. This puts McCarthy under contract through the 2019 season. The extension is important for McCarthy, as he would have effectively been a lame-duck head coach next year due to the expiring contract. There have been a lot of shakeups in Green Bay over the past two days with the firing of defensive coordinator Dom Capers and the reassignment of general manager Ted Thompson. At the moment, McCarthy seems to be safe, although there has been some speculation that they may be bringing in a new offensive coordinator. McCarthy’s ability to coordinate the offense may see a boost from the change in coordinators. He has struggled in recent seasons to integrate rookies into his system within a single preseason. A GM who is more active in free agency than the cautious Thompson could give McCarthy some veteran additions. Such a move would likely benefit quarterback Aaron Rodgers as well.
