Charlie Morton 2024 Player Outlook: Middle-Of-Rotation Arm
11 months agoAtlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton put together another solid 2023 season, ending with a 3.64 ERA in 30 games started. The veteran pitcher has consistently posted ERAs in the mid-three to four range in each of his first three years with the Braves, making him a very dependable rotational piece. However, his walk rates saw a notable jump in 2023, rising from eight percent to almost 12 percent in one season, leading to a 1.43 WHIP, the highest since his 2012 season with the Pirates. Morton's whiff percentage numbers were as expected, ranking in the top 12 percentile and generating swings and misses. While he has been proficient at striking hitters out in the past, his strikeout rates were slightly lower than expected, given the whiff rate. With a dominant campaign from Spencer Strider, a healthy Max Fried, and the addition of Chris Sale, Morton may serve as more of a supporting piece in the rotation when they're all healthy. However, considering the extensive injury history of this staff, there will likely be plenty of innings for Morton again this season. Based on his extended consistency over the last decade of posting solid ERAs in the mid-threes to mid-fours, Morton should be a reliable option in the very talented Braves' rotation.
