Commanders Fire Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio
1 year agoThe Washington Commanders fired defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and defensive backs coach Brent Vieselmeyer on Friday after their 45-10 blowout loss on Thanksgiving against the Dallas Cowboys. Washington has now lost three games in a row and eight of their last 10. They came into the 2023 campaign hoping their defense would be a consistent force, but instead it has been their glaring weakness. Head coach Ron Rivera is expected to take over the defensive play-calling for the rest of the year. Washington's defense ranks worst in the NFL in points allowed and 29th in yards allowed, one year after ranking seventh and third, respectively, in those categories. They've allowed a league-high 49 pass plays of 20 or more yards and haven't intercepted a pass in the last six games. It didn't help that the Commanders traded pass-rushers Montez Sweat and Chase Young at this year's deadline.
