Khalil Herbert 2023 NFL Player Outlook: Lead Back In A Rushing Powerhouse
2 years agoThe Chicago Bears became the fifth team to eclipse 3,000 rushing yards in a season in NFL history. Bears running back Khalil Herbert totaled 731 yards on the ground and averaged a healthy 5.7 yards per carry. Entering his third season, Herbert sheds David Montgomery from the running back corps but remains in a committee backfield. Veteran running back D'Onta Foreman signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Bears this offseason after rushing for over 900 yards for the Panthers last year. Chicago also selected Texas running back Roschon Johnson in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Herbert will compete with Foreman and Johnson for touches out of Chicago's backfield. Foreman ranked 13th among backs, and quarterback Justin Fields was second among quarterbacks in red zone carries in 2022. There is little to no touchdown upside for the third-year back from Virginia Tech, but Herbert still is the starter for Chicago. The 25-year-old only totaled 136 touches last year, only seven of which came through the air. That figure is due to increase quite substantially without David Montgomery. Montgomery has averaged nearly 40 catches a season during his time in Chicago. Herbert is currently going as the RB33 according to ADP and is a value there. Herbert shapes up to lead the Bears in rush attempts, a valuable feat in itself.
