Max Scherzer Throws Bullpen, Likely To Start Sunday
2 years agoNew York Mets starting pitcher Max Scherzer (neck) threw around 35 pitches in his first bullpen session on Friday since being scratched from his start on Tuesday due to neck spasms. Scherzer finished his bullpen with one of his usual fist pumps, so it appears to have gone well and he'll likely take the mound to start on Sunday against his former team, the Washington Nationals. The 38-year-old right-hander said earlier in the week that he was hoping to start this weekend, so his neck issues don't appear to be very serious. The matchup against the Nats is a good one, but Scherzer will be more risky than normal coming off the injury. The three-time Cy Young winner also hasn't pitched very well in 2023 in his five starts, posting a 5.56 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 20 K's in 22 2/3 frames.
