Padres Give Yu Darvish A Six-Year Extension
2 years agoThe San Diego Padres and right-hander Yu Darvish agreed to a six-year, $108 million contract extension on Thursday, according to sources. The deal will start in 2023 and runs through 2028, when Darvish will be 42 years old. The 36-year-old was previously due $18 million this season and was scheduled to become a free agent in the winter. The Japanese starter was rock-solid for the Padres in his second season with the team in 2022, delivering a 16-8 record, 3.10 ERA (3.31 FIP), 0.95 WHIP and 25.6 percent strikeout rate in 30 starts covering 194 2/3 regular season innings. His velocity stood strong and he avoided the injury bug in 2022, but there is inherent risk in depending on a starting pitcher heading into their late-30s. Darvish makes for a strong SP2 for fantasy managers. RotoBaller has him ranked as the No. 22 fantasy starter.
