Frankie Montas 2023 MLB Player Outlook: Shoulder Surgery Jeopardizing 2023 Season
2 years agoThe 2021 season was supposed to be New York Yankees right-hander Frankie Montas' (shoulder) launching pad toward stardom. After all, he turned in a 3.37 ERA and a strong 19.3% K-BB%, ranking 19th among qualified pitchers. The results were good enough to finish sixth in AL Cy Young voting, the only season to date in which he's received votes. However, Montas not only regressed to a 4.05 ERA and 16.3% K-BB% in 2022 but struggled mightily following a trade deadline deal to the Yankees, where he pitched to a 6.35 ERA across eight starts. His 2023 season is already in jeopardy as he will undergo shoulder surgery that is threatening to cost him most, if not all of the 2023 campaign. Prior to the surgery news, ATC was projecting a productive return to action with 20 starts of 3.82 ERA ball alongside a 16.5% K-BB%. However, his current ADP of 244 is clearly cause for a major pause, even if it wasn't already given his performance and shoulder issues down the 2022 stretch. Already ruled out for most of the season and perhaps all of it makes Montas undraftable as his fantasy contributions will be extremely limited, if not wiped out all together in 2023.
