Spencer Torkelson Will Have Shot To Be 1B Regular
2 years agoIt sounds as though Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson will get every chance to earn a regular role at first base for the team in 2023. He will meet with the Tigers hitting coaches this week in Arizona. "We have other options if we need to, but clearly our best team has Spencer Torkelson as a major contributor," manager A.J. Hinch said. The Tigers don't have many other viable options for the cold corner, and Torkelson was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 draft, so Detroit has plenty invested in him. The 23-year-old power hitter struggled mightily in his first taste of the majors last year and was optioned to Triple-A Toledo, where he didn't fare a lot better. He's still young, though, and possessed plenty of pop, so he remains very interesting in dynasty/keeper leagues.
