Quail Hollow
7,554 Yards - Par 71 - Greens Bermuda
Sitting out of this year's Wells Fargo Championship to prepare for the Presidents Cup, Quail Hollow's behemoth layout is back in full force to rear its ugly head this weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina. Originally designed by George W. Cobb in 1961, the venue has seen three re-designs in the last 25 years, which doesn't even include the extra distance added to the facility before the 2017 PGA Championship. The new total of 7,554 yards should be considered long by any standards, but it is almost downright criminal that the venue plays as a par 71 to boot.
Tree-lined parklands and undulating fairways are featured at the property, and we see large bunkers surrounding most greens to protect the putting surface. Lightning-quick Bermuda texture ramps up the difficulty in getting down in two or fewer strokes, and the final three holes, affectionately known as 'The Green Mile,' have been moved to holes 13-15 for this event to make sure they stay the center of attention for the match play competition.
Early rumors have stated that the rough will be virtually non-existent, measuring less than two inches, and length off the tee will be vital for golfers if they want to succeed. Add in par-five scoring, proximity from over 150 yards, par-four average, putting and strokes gained around the green, and you have a pretty good indicator for what will be needed to succeed for your country during the 2022 Presidents Cup.
Let's Look At The Stats
Stat | Quail Hollow | Tour Average |
Driving Distance | 299 | 282 |
Driving Accuracy | 53% | 62% |
GIR Percentage | 61% | 65% |
Scrambling Percentage | 54% | 57% |
Average Three-Putts Per Round | 0.71 | 0.55 |
Key Stats
Let's quickly run through how I built my model.
Total Driving (17.5%) - Distance + OTT.
Weighted Proximity (15%) - All shots historically hit at Quail Hollow. Massively geared towards mid-to-long irons.
Strokes Gained Around The Green (12.5%) - 3.3% impact in dispersion of scoring on this category.
Fast Bermuda Putting + 5-10 Feet (15%) - Match play always requires good putting to pull out these matches. The greens will be quick.
GIR (10%) - Big decline in GIR percentage at Quail Hollow. It is one of the reasons short game metrics mean a ton.
Weighted Par-Three (7.5%) - Short game + expected proximity + specific ranges.
Weighted Par-Four (10%) - We have essentially nine par-four holes that stretch between 450-506 yards.
Weighted Par-Five (12.5%) - Par-five birdie or better percentage + long iron proximity + more total driving.
I will take a deeper dive into what went into these totals later in the week on my podcast. If you aren't doing so already, you can follow Bettor Golf Podcast on Twitter.
Fantasy Golf Lineup Picks for DraftKings (PGA DFS)
We have tons of great weekly PGA articles, DFS analysis, tools and DFS advice. Be sure to read our other fantastic articles regarding this week's event.
High-Priced DraftKings DFS Players
***There are three players priced above $10,000. Please remember that my DFS article is always a first look at the field. Opinions might shift as the week goes on, and I am more than happy to discuss anyone further on Twitter.
Early thoughts on the group:
We are looking at everything without pairings or projected ownership, but you would have to imagine that the USA continues to roll out Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay as a duo. If that is the case, which I see no reason it won't be with everything we already know, stacking the pair seems like it will be a popular route this week. Let's see what is released for day one before making any decisions, but the pricing looks fair up top but might provide contrarian options elsewhere.

Mid-Priced DraftKings DFS Players
$9,000 Range
Max Homa's increase in price will make him a fade for me at this year's Presidents Cup. It's not that I don't believe in him finding success, but it more so comes down to the fact that I don't think he will get enough matches to warrant this tag.
Will we see Thomas paired with Spieth? If so, there are some red flags for that pairing. We might be able to get an intriguing head-to-head matchup against them on day one if we are fortunate to receive them against an Adam Scott/Taylor Pendrith/Cameron Davis group.
Mid-Priced DraftKings DFS Players
$8,000 Range
Sam Burns likely suffers the Max Homa fate of being match-deprived for the price, and I'd have to imagine Hideki Matsuyama goes over-owned because of name recognition and pricing on the International side. I will be out on both, but the happy-go-lucky demeanor of Tony Finau makes him in play for all matches and pairings. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if he sneaks his way towards being the top USA scorer at 10/1. A slip-up from Cantlay/Schauffele would quickly open the door there.
Low-Priced DraftKings DFS Players To Consider ($5000-$7,900)
Collin Morikawa is currently projecting to be my largest fade candidate on the board. The matches should be there, but I will be looking for potential head-to-head battles against him in the betting market.
Sungjae Im/Adam Scott are my two favorite International selections for the week. Both are top-seven options for me when comparing all golfers, and each could be a unique captain pick for DFS because everyone will want to play an American player. I'd imagine getting in the full spectrum of matches is in play for each if they get off to hot starts.
Sub-$5,000 Options To Consider
Come on, Trevor Immelman! Pair Cameron Davis and Taylor Pendrith together to be the International's version of Cantlay/Schauffele. Not only could they work into getting a full onslaught of matches if all goes correctly, but their distance plays nicely together for Quail Hollow. Yes, the putting numbers on their most basic level might seem weird to make this a duo, but Davis' short game and iron proximity plays nicely next to Pendrith's GIR totals. They are the ultimate wild cards for destruction.
