Mitch Trubisky 2022 NFL Player Outlook: Pittsburgh's Starting QB For Now
2 years agoThe Pittsburgh Steelers signed former Chicago Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky to a two-year, $14 million contract this offseason. After playing his way out of Chicago in 2020, the former No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft signed a one-year deal in the 2021 offseason with the Buffalo Bills as the backup to star quarterback Josh Allen. He completed 199-of -297 passes for 2,055 yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions while rushing 33 times for 195 yards and a score for the Bears in 2020. The 27-year-old reportedly looked impressive in practice last year, which led to the Steelers taking a chance on the former top pick in 2022 with long-time franchise QB Ben Roethlisberger retiring. Trubisky's role as a starter could be short-lived this season as the Steelers drafted Pittsburgh's quarterback Kenny Pickett with the 20th pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. Trubisky might be the clear starter for Week 1, but how long will his run last? He has a strong arm and has quality skill players in his offensive arsenal with wide receivers Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool, and tight end Pat Freiermuth. Pittsburgh is expected to be a run-heavy team led by running back Najee Harris; there may not be much passing volume for Trubisky immediately. With the addition of Pickett, the Steelers could pull the plug on Trubisky mid-season if he struggles out of the gate. Trubisky has an FFPC ADP of 350 and is worth a pick in the later rounds to pair with Pickett in either deep-best ball or Superflex league formats.
