Javonte Williams 2022 Outlook: Talented but Restrained
3 years agoDenver Broncos running back Javonte Williams had a strong rookie campaign in 2021. Williams finished as the RB15 in PPR formats after accumulating 1,219 scrimmage yards, 43 receptions, and seven total touchdowns. He was also sixth among RBs in yards created and seventh in yards created per touch, demonstrating his efficiency. This solid production came despite sharing Denver's backfield with teammate Melvin Gordon III, who turned in a valuable season in his own right. In some respects, 2022 should be more of the same for Williams, but in others, it'll be quite different. Firstly, the Broncos re-signed Gordon, which is certainly disappointing for those hoping for a Williams breakout. Gordon's presence will likely mean the timeshare between the two backs will continue, preventing Williams from becoming a workhorse. On the other hand, the Broncos acquired star quarterback Russell Wilson via trade this offseason, which should boost Denver's offensive prospects as a whole. With more yards and touchdowns to go around, Williams should see increased fantasy production even if he does not receive more touches. It is important to note that since May 1, Williams has been drafted as the RB8 in fantasy drafts. This is a steep price for a player in a clearly shared backfield. However, he becomes a strong selection if he starts to slide outside of the top-10 RBs.
