Mac Jones Could Improve His Deep Ball
3 years agoNew England Patriots second-year quarterback Mac Jones could make significant improvement in the deep passing game this year. Jones delivered three downfield, tight-window throws in the final practice of mandatory minicamp that couldn't have been placed any better. Forty-one percent of Jones' pass attempts that were thrown at least 20 yards downfield last year were over- or underthrown, and he ranked 24th with a 38.8% completion rate on vertical routes in 2021, according to Next Gen Stats. His receivers didn't get much separation deep down the field to help him out, but Jones felt "good strides" were made in spring practices. The 23-year-old will have more help with the addition of wideout DeVante Parker, but he'll still be more of a mediocre QB2 option in this offense.
