John Metchie III 2022 NFL Player Outlook: Diagnosed With Leukemia, Season In Doubt
3 years agoThe Houston Texans elected to use their second-round draft capital on former University of Alabama wide receiver John Metchie III. The standout prospect suffered a torn ACL during the National Championship game against Georgia, which is why he slipped outside the first round in the 2022 NFL Draft. Metchie is a burner with reliable hands, hauling 96 receptions for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns during his junior campaign. Metchie nearly hit 1,000 yards during his sophomore season with only 55 receptions while also finding the end zone six times. He's a phenomenal talent despite being undersized as a receiver at 6-0, 195 pounds. Metchie lands in an intriguing spot because Houston possibly found a legitimate franchise quarterback in a former fourth-round rookie quarterback, Davis Mills. Brandin Cooks will continue to be the alpha target within the Texans' offense, but Metchie has an excellent opportunity to become the WR2 ahead of second-year wideout Nico Collins in 2022. However, everything changed for the rookie wideout in July. Metchie was recently diagnosed with APL, a form of blood cancer. The 22-year-old is unlikely to see the field this season as Metchie's health and recovery from this is his biggest priority. "My main focus will be on my health and recovery. Thank you in advance for your support and well wishes," said Metchie. "I cannot wait to come back strong than ever. God bless."
