Khalil Herbert 2022 Outlook - Valuable Handcuff to Target Late
3 years agoKhalil Herbert will enter his sophomore season as the Chicago Bears' backup running back while David Montgomery sits atop the depth chart for the fourth consecutive year. Montgomery missed four games during the 2021 season, which vaulted Herbert into a significant role in the Chicago offense. The rookie out of Virginia Tech averaged 19.5 carries for 86 yards in his four games as a starter, which included a 100-yard rushing performance against one of the league's best-run defenses. The only concern was that he was not much of a factor in the passing game during his time as the lead back, as he saw just 10 targets in those four games. Herbert doesn't carry any fantasy value while Montgomery is active, but the 24-year-old should still be stashed on benches in the late rounds of fantasy drafts because of what we saw in 2021. In what should be another run-heavy offense, Herbert would enter the high-end RB2 range should Montgomery miss any action this upcoming season.
