Alexander Mattison 2022 Outlook: Remains One of The Most Elite Back-Ups in Football
3 years agoAlexander Mattison seems to have one of the most secure roles in football. He's the direct backup to Dalvin Cook and walks into a massive workload whenever Cook misses any time. Last season, Cook missed four games. In those four games, Mattison accumulated 129.5 yards per game on 27 opportunities per game (21.5 rush attempts + 5.5 targets). He turned those opportunities into 21.7 PPR points per game. To put that into perspective, Cook churned out 15.9 PPR points on an average of 22.9 opportunities per game in 2021. If Cook were to suffer an injury in 2022, it'd likely be more of the same. The Vikings do have Kene Nwangwu, whom they selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, but they didn't seem too keen on using him last season a whole lot behind Mattison. He won't have much standalone value, but we know he's a sure-fire RB1 should anything happen to Dalvin Cook this season. You won't start him week-in-and-week out, but there's a good chance you get multiple slam-dunk performances out of Mattison being that Cook has missed an average of three games per season the last four season.
