BALLER MOVE: Sell Oneil Cruz
ANALYSIS: Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz was a popular breakout pick in the industry after missing the majority of last season due to an ankle injury.
Despite high expectations from fantasy managers, Cruz's performance has been underwhelming. With an ADP just outside the fourth round, he was projected to be a significant five-category contributor. However, his current stats of .239/.288/.342 with only three home runs and three stolen bases could have significantly hindered your team’s production.
His underlying metrics are also not in Cruz’s favor and suggest that his struggles may linger throughout the summer. His .225 xBA and .341 xSLG place him in the 24th percentile among all qualified hitters. In addition, his horrifying 36.8% K rate puts him in the fourth percentile of all hitters.
While Cruz hits the ball extremely hard, with a 92.2 mph average exit velocity, he does not make contact often. His 30.9% whiff rate and 35.6% chase rate are both well below average.
Another reason managers should look to sell Cruz is that he is not running as often. Cruz swiped three bags in nine games last season compared to his three in 32 games this year. His sprint speed remains above average, but if he is not getting on base, his speed does not matter.
I would advise selling Cruz. He is struggling to make contact and get on base and, as a result, is unable to showcase his elite speed as often as managers expect him to.
