ANALYSIS: Once a promising Yankees prospect, Luis Gil made one start for the Yankees in 2022 before Tommy John surgery shut him down in May, causing him to miss the rest of the season and nearly all of 2023. Finally healthy, the 25-year-old has come out of the gate strong in 2024, posting a 3-1 record with a 2.92 ERA and 1.14 WHIP through seven starts.

If not for his command issues, he'd look downright dominant, but the righty has walked 24 batters in his seven starts, surrendering a 15.7% BB%, which has suppressed his K-BB% to 13.7%. Innings were also a limiting factor earlier in the season, but it looks like that might be a thing of the past after pitching six or more innings in each of his last two starts. While he may no longer be limited by innings on a per-game basis, the command issues likely aren't going away since he's never had lower than a 10.0% BB% in his entire pro career dating back to 2015.
That could spell trouble for him at some point, and his FIP (3.81), xFIP (4.16), and SIERA (4.25) are all well higher than his actual ERA. The Dominican's ERA does not appear to be a product of luck, however, as his .188 BABIP is extraordinarily low.
Managers in season-long formats should pick him up for pitching depth but know that there's likely going to be some blowup games mixed in. Gil is available in over 50% of Yahoo leagues for managers interested in his services.
