BALLER MOVE: Stash in Deeper Leagues
CALL-UP ETA: June
ANALYSIS: With the last-place Chicago White Sox’s season already circling the drain, it might not be long before the youth movement is underway on the South Side. The first candidate on the list of prospects that are destined to be called up later this summer is certainly Colson Montgomery, MLB Pipeline’s No. 8 prospect in all of baseball for 2024.
Montgomery, a 2021 first-round pick, struggled mightily with hitting during spring training, going just 3-for-20 (.150) but drawing four walks over 13 Cactus League outings. His numbers with Triple-A Charlotte probably aren’t convincing enough for a May promotion, as Montgomery is hitting just .222 (26-for-117) with six home runs, five doubles, 12 RBI, and three stolen bases across 31 minor league contests this year.
With that said, the big 22-year-old lefty-hitting shortstop has walked 21 times already and identifies as an on-base machine with the ability to hit for both power and average.
Colson Montgomery now has 3 HR in his last 5 G.

Montgomery’s frame and profile has drawn comparisons to former National League Rookie of the Year, Corey Seager. When the Los Angeles Dodgers elevated Seager to the major league roster back in September 2015, he was an instant fantasy baseball difference-maker with a .337/.425/.561 triple-slash line, four homers, eight two-baggers, 17 RBI, and two steals through 113 plate appearances (27 games) to close out that season.
While those are hefty expectations to place on Montgomery, he needs to be monitored in deep mixed and AL-only fantasy leagues ahead of July’s trade deadline.
Look for the ChiSox to eventually explore trade opportunities involving both veterans Paul DeJong and Nicky Lopez to free up a roster spot for Montgomery. DeJong is having his best season since a 2019 All-Star campaign, batting .240 with a .753 OPS, five long balls, seven doubles, and 10 RBI through 96 ABs this year, so he’ll be a prime target for contending clubs seeking a power bat or bench depth at short.
